This is a unique program done in conjunction with the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association's Appellate Practice Committee. For the first time, a panel of Eighth Circuit judges takes a break from the twice-yearly docket in Kansas City and participates in a CLE program about appellate advocacy, legal writing, oral argument, their Court’s internal operating procedures, and similar topics.

The panel is also unique as each of the three judges (Smith, Benton, and Stras) previously sat on the Supreme Courts for their respective states of Arkansas, Missouri, and Minnesota. The panel will note the differences in federal and state appeals, specifically the differences in state and federal rules, and standards of review. Judge Stras clerked for Justice Thomas on the United States Supreme Court, which enables him to provide insights into its practice. In sum, the program will cover many points that will enable attorneys to maximize their effectiveness.
